College football is back, gentlemen. We’ve all waited long enough for this day to come. I feel like this is the proverbial purge for our indulgence in the sports variety. I’m a psycho. Let’s just get into the betting.
Like we’ve said countless times before, the act of betting on week one of any sport, let alone college football, is a foolish one. If you’re craving to purge your gambling urges because they are too strong to overcome, tread lightly with low lays or small parlays.
Always remember to check your own lines, as well. We made these picks earlier this week and the lines are on the move.
Thursday Night Games
South Carolina @ North Carolina
Line: SCar -3
TSG Pick: North Carolina +3
Both South Carolina and North Carolina couldn’t stop a nosebleed on defense last year. North Carolina, however, is returning just about everyone on offense, while the Cocks are debuting a brand new defense. Not only are we picking North Carolina to cover, but we are also expecting North Carolina to pick up a win at home in their 2015 season opener.
Michigan @ Utah
Line: Utah -5
TSG Pick: Utah -5 (Under 46)
The line on this one doesn’t really make too much sense to begin with. It’s common knowledge that a brand new coach and energy has given Michigan some optimism. However, it seems as though the Harbaugh factor bled into this Vegas line. Maybe it’s the bettors. Maybe Michigan is getting the benefit of the doubt. However, without a decent quarterback leading the Wolverines, and with the Utes being led by a senior quarterback, we expect Utah to cover this one and potentially win by double digits.
A bonus on this one will also be the under. We don’t really see Michigan adding to the point total. A total at around 40 will most likely be the end result.
Western Kentucky @ Vanderbilt
Line: WKU -3
TSG Pick: Western Kentucky -3
The redheaded stepchild of the SEC will go up against running back Leon Allen and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. This one is sad. It pains us to say, but there is nothing that Vandy has shown us through the offseason that makes us think that this team has gotten any better. A three-point dog at home is always hard to bet against for a season opener, but this one should be a safe pick against the SEC doormat.
Friday Night Games
Baylor @ Southern Methodist
Line: Baylor -35
TSG Pick: Baylor -35
SMU was just so, so terrible last year. Baylor could score points at will, and we don’t see Art calling the dogs off before this one if seven touchdowns deep. There really isn’t much else to say about this one. Bears by at least 42.
Arizona State @ Texas A&M
Line: TAMU -3.5
TSG Pick: ASU +3.5
Arizona State is going to Reliant Stadium as an underdog to start off their season. The Sun Devils return solid play at quarterback. However, the lack of wide receivers may be a concern for ASU fans. Texas A&M’s defense looked atrocious last year, forcing Sumlin to fire his defensive coordinator. Any time a team has to learn a new defense, you can expect them to give up a few assignment errors during the first half of the season. ASU is the better team, and we expect them to prove it on Saturday in Texas.
Monday Night Game
Ohio State @ VaTech
Line: OSU -13.5
TSG Pick: VaTech +13.5
We ragged on Ohio State for the majority of the season last year. Virginia Tech handed the championship winning Buckeyes their only loss from 2014. Their confidence at home could not be any higher. Ohio State will be playing this game with top contributors on defense out due to suspension, and it seems that the perfect storm that the Hokies could only pray for has been handed to them on a silver platter. Ohio State wins by 10, pulling away late, however VaTech will keep this game close just long enough to cover your bets.
There you have it. Week one picks from the TSGs. We will be answering questions on a weekly mailbag, so shoot questions to firstname.lastname@example.org. Enjoy the weekend and follow us @tokensportsguys for drunken, in-game coverage..
