There is no better fast food meal than breakfast. Plain and simple. Seriously, it’s why, 45 minutes ago, I felt compelled to walk through the rainy streets of Chicago to the neighborhood McDonald’s for a sausage, egg and cheese McGriddle. If it was lunch time, McDonald’s, or any fast food like that, would disgust me. But for some reason, fast-food/fast-casual breakfast just does it for me. And nobody does it better than Waffle House.
Waffle House, the official unofficial breakfast restaurant of college football, has a fun contest for the Clemson-South Carolina rivalry game coming up next week. The winning city will be awarded free food from the breakfast conglomerate. I know Clemson is No. 1 and all, but I feel like, after this announcement, the stakes have never been higher.
From Yahoo’s Dr. Saturday:
The restaurant chain, along with restaurant suppliers Basic American Foods, C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc., and Royal Cup, Inc., announced Tuesday that it will give out free food – waffles, hashbrowns and coffee – to fans at a Waffle House location in the city of the winning school, Clemson, S.C., or Columbia, S.C.
On top of the “Waffle Wager,” Waffle House will also donate $10,000 to the general scholarship fund of the winning university.
The Tigers-Gamecocks matchup is the third edition of the Waffle Wager. Last year, it centered around the Auburn-Georgia game, which Georgia won 34-7. After UGA’s win, “more than $24,000 in free waffles, hashbrowns and coffee” were provided to fans and students in Athens, Ga.
If you don’t live near a Waffle House, I feel for you. There is nothing like stumbling into a brick-and-mortar WH hammered at 3:45 a.m. and ordering an “All-Star Special” with a cup of coffee. It is absolutely delicious. Make sure you get those hashbrowns “scattered, smothered and covered” by the way, otherwise you just aren’t doing it right.
I was already planning on watching this game next week, but now I have a vested interest in who wins, as Columbia is only 90 miles away from my house.
Let’s be honest though, the Gamecocks are terrible. Maybe the only thing that can inspire them to win a big game is some free waffles..
