“In 2017, I bet we’ll have flying cars.” Nope. We’re just out here arguing over more stupid shit instead of moving society forward. What a time to be alive.
A group of about 20 protesters at the University of Virginia attempted to shut down a Delta Psi fraternity’s “cops and robbers” themed party — you know, similar to that game you used to play at grade school recess — because the costumes “make a joke of mass incarceration and the prison-industrial complex.” Yes, this is the most important thing UVa Students United had to do on a Thursday night.
From UVA Students United:
The predominantly white members of this fraternity got to take their costumes off at the end of the night, people trapped in the prison system do not. The women wore “sexy” cop outfits complete with hats and badges, some inexplicably had tear drop tattoos drawn on their face. Historically, the police have justified violence against people of color in the name of protecting white women, and in wearing these costumes, these women made a joke of that legacy of violence.
Well, yeah, bozo. These students get to take their costumes off at the end of the day because they didn’t murder anyone or steal a car or some other shit you can get locked up for. It’s the same thought process when someone is having a jersey party (for those who have never been invited to a jersey party or a party, that’s when you wear a jersey of your favorite team or play and engage in alcoholic festivities, risky decisions, and playful conversation).
I take the jersey off at the end of the night because I’m not Tom Brady, I don’t have five Super Bowl rings, I don’t have a multi-million dollar paycheck, and I don’t have a supermodel wife. But that’s probably Brady’s white privilege that got him all that, so I digress.
Is there a party theme that’s not offensive? How about one celebrating bees? “No, bees are dying off at an alarming rate because of your white privilege.” Okay, then we’re gonna press forward with the cops and robbers theme.
You’re more than welcome to click on the group’s Facebook page to read the full post, but you already know what to expect. The post also says there’s video coming which I am very, very excited to see.
As for the party, it was eventually shut down after the IFC president and campus police arrived on scene and, rather predictably, collapsed under the PC pressure.
“It should be noted that Delta Psi had no intentions to offend anyone, but they should have more foresight to be sensitive to a theme like this especially in light of recent events involving police both in Charlottesville and on the national scale,” [IFC president Henry] Crochiere said.
K. *emoji that’s looking up in a ‘fuck you’ sort of manner*
Thank you, UVA Students United. You’ve saved us from…um… I’m not really sure. From being looked down on by incarcerated drug dealers and child molesters or something? Anyway, good job. What a cause..
