University of Houston football coach Tom Herman made a promise to his team at the beginning of the year: Win the conference championship and he will wear a custom grill on his teeth.
Tomorrow, Herman will fulfill that promise.
From Yahoo Sports:
Houston announced Monday that the first-year head coach will meet with Houston-based hip-hop artist Paul Wall to be fitted for a diamond grill. For real. Wall will stop by the school’s football offices on Tuesday afternoon after the team practices in preparation for its Dec. 31 matchup against Florida State in the Peach Bowl.
Before the season began, Herman promised the team he would get a grill if the Cougars won the American Athletic Conference championship. That came to fruition when the Cougars beat Temple 24-13 to win the conference title.
Herman, who was probably the hottest name in coaching this offseason, elected to stay at Houston rather than pursue other coaching opportunities at major programs. Many suspect that he is just waiting out Charlie Strong, circling the Texas program like a vulture waiting to eat. Either way, he probably didn’t think he’d be around long enough to fulfill this promise to his players, but, unfortunately for him, he is.
Tom seems like a pretty good dude. I’m not going to lie, I thought “grills” were pretty cool in fifth grade. I wore a fake one with my Braylon Edwards Michigan jersey one Halloween, pretending to be a homeless man. Yeah, that costume wouldn’t fly anymore, as it perpetuates the marginalization of [insert demographic name here].
I’ll try to share some photos when they are posted online. I’m sure a young-to-middle-age, potentially balding white man in a grill is something we can all enjoy together..
