These Italian Nuns Are Claiming They Were Brutally Hazed For Jesus

Here’s your shocking discovery of the day: Hazing isn’t exclusive to fraternities.

A former Italian nun who was part of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate is coming forward with some pretty damning allegations regarding the rituals of her order around the 1990s. This isn’t some preschool level shit, either. We’re not talking about personal servitude; we’re talking the very definition of hazing. The acts universities would decimate a chapter over.

From Daily Mail:

A former nun has claimed that she was forced to engage in daily self-flagellation and encouraged to write her vows in her own blood while living in a convent in southern Italy.

The woman, now in her 30s, alleges that nuns of Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, which has its headquarters in Frigento, Avellino province in Campania, took part in the rituals in the 1990s.

In addition to the punishing rituals, she says she was fed out-of-date yoghurt and corned beef, which the nuns were told would not affect them if they ate it ‘with true obedience’.

Writing vows in blood, forced consumption of vile food, and flagellation — that’s not child’s play. Flagellation is weird. It definitely freaks me out, but the remaining two allegations are straight out of the playbook of a deadly serious pledgemaster. The type of pledgemaster incoming pledges see in their nightmares. The type of pledgemaster recently initiated brothers see in their nightmares. In addition to all of the above, the occasional branding would occur within the convent. No big deal. Just a bunch of religious leaders hazing the crap out of each other.

The order in question has been paying attention to the American news, though. They, of course, were asked if they were guilty, and took a line directly from every media hazing report in recent history.

Father Stefano Maria Manelli, the General Minister of the order who founded it in the early 1970s, has denied all wrongdoing.

Straight up denial. We’ll see if that works out any better for them. It certainly hasn’t done shit to help our cases.
