The Evergreen State College, a public 4-year liberal arts college located in Olympia, Washington that’s currently embroiled in an ongoing student protester takeover, may not retain its public status for much longer.
Senate Bill 5946, put forth by Washington Senator Phil Fortunato (R), calls for the transition of Evergreen State from a public college to a private college. His exact language is below.
AN ACT Relating to transitioning The Evergreen State College to a private four-year institution of higher education; adding a new section to chapter 28B.40 RCW; and creating a new section.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. The legislature finds that it is incumbent upon public universities and colleges to foster an environment that is conducive to free, open, and rigorous dialogue. Because public universities and colleges are paid for with taxpayer dollars, they have a greater responsibility to be respectful and tolerant of all students regardless of geography, political affiliation, or personal values. When a public university or college fails to uphold those values, it is the responsibility of the legislature to transition that university or college from a public institution to a private institution.
Fortunato isn’t the only Washington state politician calling for swift action in the Evergreen State shitshow. Matt Manweller (R), who represents the 13th Legislative District, sent the below letter to Evergreen State’s Director of Government Relations.
It’s very, very refreshing to see that there are people up there in Washington who understand the absurdity of what’s going down at Evergreen State and are willing to fight for what’s right at the risk of being called a bigoted racist white supremacist by the moronic militant protesters. I’m praying this passes.
We’ll keep you updated on what happens with the bill once it reaches the House..
