Back in 2012, the University of North Dakota scrapped its legendary nickname, the Fighting Sioux. It was yet another blow furthering the tragic plight of the American Indian mascot, a once great and prosperous people whose history has been almost entirely swept away by the white man’s misplaced notions of progress. I know it’s not American to admit our nation’s sins, but I can think of nothing more shameful than how our countrymen have historically stereotyped and tried to eradicate the American Indian mascot.

Fast forward to today. UND, which currently does not have a mascot, is competing in the Frozen Four. For all you Southerners out there, the Frozen Four is the hockey version of college basketball’s Final Four–hockey, essentially, being a sport where people swing flattened out baseball bats while running on really cold water.

In support of The Team Formerly Known As The Fighting Sioux, the Gamma Phi Betas at North Dakota hung up a banner which has resulted in the administration forcing them to undergo sensitivity training.

Note that the banner doesn’t say “Fighting Sioux.” It doesn’t even have a picture of the former logo. The banner quite literally only alludes to there having once existed a mascot.

Don’t worry, girls. I’m sure your nationals will support you in the face of this absurdity.

From the National Review:

Gamma Phi Beta spokeswoman Maureen Walker told the Grand Forks Herald that the chapter’s members are “working as fast as they can to take the next steps and we’re reaching out to the American Indian Student Services to take them up on their offer to provide sensitivity training as soon as possible.”

I know it’s empty out there, but we really need to get you something better to do with your free time than get in fights over school logos, University of North Dakota.
