Rochester Institute Of Technology Tells Students To “Rub One Out” To Prevent Campus Sexual Assaults

You know what pairs perfectly with speeches on preventing sexual assault on campus? Jokes about jerking off and cartoon characters. They go together like the Bert and Ernie of mass genocide.

The Rochester Institute of Technology is getting blasted after a slide was shown during a freshmen orientation session called “Alcohol and Chill.” It featured Winnie the Pooh character Roo, whose name in this case is an acronym for “Rub One Out.” So much to unpack in this sentence. So, so much.

Welp, some sophomore is getting fired.

What I’ve learned about talks on extremely serious topics is it’s usually best not to make terrible jokes. Like if I’m in a business setting and my boss is giving me the “you’re fired” talk and just boops me on the nose and goes, “Boop,” I’m gonna be incredibly confused for a few seconds and then filled with rage. So much rage.

But hey, maybe we’re taking this whole thing out of context? Let’s get the university’s version of the story.

From RIT:

The format of the program was more of a “straight talk” approach, weaving in humor along with important facts and identifying resources for students. The overarching goal was to increase awareness and promote discussion about the ways we together can prevent instances of sexual misconduct on our campus. Unfortunately, one slide, out of 77, taken out of context, has sparked controversy, mainly on social media surrounding the entire program. In my opinion, this serves to underscore the complexity involved in addressing this issue. In our experience, telling students what “not to do” without talking about specific situations that are difficult to navigate is irresponsible; we addressed the subject from a place and context that students could understand.

I mean, kudos for kind of sticking to your guns on this? Although now you’ve got the image of a kangaroo in the mind of every freshman boy that’s whacking off in his dorm. You’d better hope the University of Akron never brings their mascot to campus or else it is gonna be messssssssy.

Remember, only you can prevent forest fires — by cranking one out instead of lighting trees on fire.
