How much do you love your favorite sports team? Probably not as much as Ryan Holtan-Murphy, who is a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. Holtan-Murphy married his wife in a Green Bay-themed wedding over the weekend and has announced that he’s taking her last name: Packer. Not because he’s some progressive douche who thinks the practice of women taking a man’s last name is degrading; it’s literally just so he will be Mr. Packer.
The couple was married at Willis Tower in Chicago and Holtan-Murphy planned the majority of the wedding’s Packer-themed decorations. He also surprised his bride with a Green Bay-themed suit after the ceremony.
This dude is clearly obsessed with a sports team to a degree I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before. Sure, there are plenty of crazy Alabama football fans who have ridiculous tattoos, and Packers fans in general are their own special breed of crazy. But what makes this case so spectacular is the cold hard fact that there’s a non-zero chance Holtan-Murphy courted this girl specifically because her last name is Packer. And if that actually is what Holtan-Murphy did, that’s the true meaning of sports team dedication.
According to ABC News, the couple met at a karaoke bar in Madison, Wisconsin whereat Holtan-Murphy discovered her last name.
“Marie is beautiful, strong, hilarious. And then she told me her last name,” he recalled. “I didn’t believe her and made her show two forms of ID and a credit card.”
Although I can’t imagine women are lining up out the door for a guy who appears to have an unhealthy obsession with a football team he doesn’t play for, he had to have other women in his 20+ years of manhood in whom he was interested. Did he eschew them in hopes of one day meeting Ms. Packer with the goal of becoming Mr. Packer? Or was this just an example of serendipity?
I have so many questions that will likely never be answered. I’m just happy Marie is also a Packers fan and is okay with Holtan-Murphy’s obsession. Because had she not been, our boy Ryan would’ve been ruined. Instead, he’s on his honeymoon happier than any man should be upon discontinuing his last name.
Congrats, Mr. and Mrs. Packer..
