Your New Year’s resolution of getting back in shape just got a whole lot easier. According to a study done by researchers at Ohio University, an individual can tone his muscles, get stronger, and stop muscle atrophy by simply imagining working out.

Researchers at Ohio University, according to the Breitbart News Network, conducted an experiment using two sets of healthy individuals. The researchers wrapped the wrists of one of the sets in a cast and gave them instructions to sit still for 11 minutes, five days a week, for four weeks, and ‘perform mental imagery of strong muscle contractions,’ — or, imagine exercising.
The other set were not given any instruction.
The results illustrated that the body and mind are more intertwined than we though.
At the end of the four weeks, the participants who engaged in the ‘mental exercise’ were twice as strong as those who didn’t, Breitbart reports.
Additionally, those participants had a stronger brain because the exercises created stronger neuromuscular pathways.
Call me a fundamentalist sheep of the church of iron all you want, but I refuse to believe this heresy. Getting in shape is all about going to the gym, waiting 15 minutes for a bench to open up, loading up the barbell with more weight than you rightfully should, having your spotter throw out his back essentially curling said weight, and completely playing it off like you just set a new max. That’s how the gym is done — you don’t do it by filling your spank bank with sets of lat pull-downs.
Not to mention, if this is true, we’re talking about a very slippery slope. Soon enough, we’ll be using our minds for everything, and that sex scene from “Demolition Man” could become a reality. I’ll be damned if when I finally have a chance to bone Sandra Bullock I’m wearing a virtual reality helmet, just like I’ll be damned if some chump tries to claim he benches 315 when he’s never touched a weight in his life.
As for everyone else, do with this information what you want. Maybe it’ll work, maybe it won’t, but let’s be honest — most of you are probably too lazy to commit to mentally lifting weights daily, anyway..
