All too often do we hear about the negative side of Greek Life. That’s why, every so often, we like to highlight some of the positive stories involving fraternities. This one about Mizzou’s Beta Theta Pi is some next level awesome shit. Every fraternity loves their house workers. You say hi to the cook, ask them how they’re doing, maybe see who they’ve got in the big game, and half the time he or she is also your main drug dealer. It’s a great working relationship, but you often never dig deep enough and know too much about them — their family life, their kids, etc. These Mizzou Betas dug deep though after they found out their cook’s wife was in the hospital.
From FOX 2:
When Scott Young, the Beta Theta Pi house cook, received bad news about his wife, the young men jumped into action.
“What they did was raise $10,000 for me and my wife. She had pancreatic cancer. By the grace of God, they helped me out,” he said.
Young said his wife is almost fully recovered and the money raised made it possible for him to make daily trips back and forth from St. Louis and help pay off of some of the medical debt.
That’s not an easy task. St. Louis is roughly a two-hour drive from Columbia, and you can bet those weren’t easy miles for the cook to drive.
The giving didn’t stop there, though.
Two weeks ago, when the house dishwasher’s daughter was found murdered in St. Louis, the group came up with $1,300 to help with the funeral and other costs.
“We just felt like we needed to help out,” said Gunnar Koenig, a sophomore Beta member. “It was just guys in the house that came up with the money. We didn’t reach out to community, just active members.
That’s some absolutely amazing stuff right there. When people question you about Greek Life, hassle you about “buying friends” and everything else under the sun, it’s always good to point to stories just like this. These guys didn’t have to do anything. If these people were employed anywhere else, they’d probably be told “sorry ‘bout ya” by their managers. This right here is what it’s all about. Brotherhood to the max..
