An American tourist died in South Africa this week after a lion jumped through her car window and mauled her to death during a drive-thru safari.

According to an operations manager at the safari park, a man and woman were riding through the safari with their windows completely down, which is a violation of the rules and, more obviously, a violation of basic common sense.

From The Guardian:

“We had a gentleman and a lady driving with the windows wide open. The lion came through the passenger side window and attacked her. The man sustained slight injuries trying to fight her off.

Visitors to the park are given numerous warnings not to leave their windows open, Simpson said. “We make it so clear. We put signage up everywhere that people must keep their windows closed. We hand them a slip of paper when they enter the park; I really don’t understand why people think its OK to leave windows open.

While it is abundantly clear why passengers of a species that has captured and held prisoner a group of aggressive lions should keep their car windows closed at all times in a fucking drive-thru safari, there is also this horrifying video that exists to remind you to lock your doors.

According to the safari park, animal attacks aren’t particularly uncommon these days.

This is the third attack at the park in the past four months, according to eNCA. An Australian man was bitten by a lion in March after he left his window open and later posted images of the incident on Facebook. A 13-year-old who cut through the park while riding his bike was attacked by a cheetah a few days later.

Maybe the answer is to just give lions some space.
