Tim Beckman was so pumped for next week. The head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini couldn’t wait to get back on the sidelines to call plays and tell his injured players to quit bitching and get back out there. He was so tickled by the start of the season, he fired out this tweet:
But a mere hour later, athletic director Mike Thomas announced the firing of Beckman for pressuring his athletes to play while hurt. Awkward.
Former offensive lineman Simon Cvijanovic raised similar allegations on Twitter in May, leading to the university’s launch of the review, which is not yet complete.
“The preliminary information external reviewers shared with me does not reflect our values or our commitment to the welfare of our student-athletes, and I’ve chosen to act accordingly,” Thomas said. “During the review, we have asked people not to rush to judgment, but I now have enough information to make this decision in assessing the status and direction of the football program.”
It’s safe to assume he didn’t see this one coming. To add to the cringe, Beckman has since deleted his Twitter out of embarrassment. Poor guy.
But Beckman wasn’t in the wrong here. Mike Thomas is a bitch. These players have a job to do. Doesn’t matter if a guy is concussed so severely he can’t piss standing up. It’s a physical sport. Rub some dirt on it, son. If you want to be a champion now, you’re going to have to put up with a few headaches and outbursts of rage and thoughts of suicide later in life. It’s all part of the game..
