It’s been a rough few weeks for Sparky, the Arizona State Sun Devils mascot. First, the school had to apologize to a city council member after Sparky jumped on his back during an ASU football game. The councilman had just had back surgery and the playful leap turned into a torn back muscle and several more weeks of recovery. Oops.
Finally home from the hospital! Here's what happened Friday that put me back in hospital 2 months after back surgery: pic.twitter.com/FGdpVli3x9

Now, Sparky’s under fire again. This time for just trying to be himself.
Arizona State University calls itself the ‘Sun Devils’. This is an inappropriate and offensive nickname to all good, non devil worshippers in the world.
Satan is a symbol of evil. A supposed institution of higher learning should not be able to use this symbol to represent itself [sic]. The ‘Sun Devil’ mascot scares children and causes nightmares.
The world will be a better place when all images of Satan, including the ‘Sun Devil’ mascot and symbol are eliminated.
The petition, which appears to have been edited and shut down by its creator, received 432 supporters out of its goal of 500 by Monday. The creator, Josh Miller said the whole thing was a joke, which is a crying shame. The people who would’ve come out of the woodwork to seriously defend Miller’s petition would’ve been hilarious.
The petition was signed by mostly University of Arizona fans who are likely still a little pissed their haka dance was discontinued over the weekend due to similar outcry. As for Sparky, he’s one of the best-designed mascots in all of college sports. ASU also has a knack for churning out females that are fire as hell and total smokeshows (devil puns for days) so the school is doing something right.
I’m glad Sparky didn’t get burned here..
