Twisting the knife. Adding insult to injury. Rubbing salt in the wound. However you want to word it, Georgia linebacker Davin Bellamy is doing it to Baker Mayfield. How? By trying to get “Humble Yourself” trademarked, a phrase he yelled at Mayfield following Georgia’s 54-48 double-overtime win over Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.

From TMZ Sports:

TMZ Sports has learned Davin Bellamy submitted an application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office looking to lock down the trademark for “Humble Yourself” for clothing like shirts, hats and uniforms.

Bellamy filed the application on January 4 … 3 days after Georgia beat Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.

Talk about a savagely savvy move. This is what I love about America, a country where you can make a flippant dig at someone moments after crushing their hopes and dreams on national television and then turn around and craft said comment into a massive merchandising opportunity. An opportunity which has the potential to blow up to crying Jordan levels in terms of prime memeability.

Sure, Baker Mayfield’s still got his Heisman and is poised to have a solid career ahead of him. But “Humble Yourself” marks the last moment of Mayfield’s college career, and it now has the potential to be memorialized forever. When you set yourself up as the guy who ruthlessly shit talks and clowns opponents ala the Kansas nut-grabbing and Ohio State flag-planting incidents along with countless others, this could have a devastating impact. The dude is so entirely defined by his ego that an entire campaign built around his big-stage failure could burrow its way so deeply into his psyche that he may go the route of Johnny Manziel and fade away into obscurity.

Or the thought of all the youths out there wearing “Humble Yourself” hats and T-shirts with his dejected face on them could be enough to light a fire under his ass and he ends up throwing for a million yards in the NFL and takes the Cleveland Browns to five consecutive Super Bowls. Either way.
