Georgia Lawyer And Judge Agree, Watching Football Is More Important Than Suing Someone

2017 was a very weird year, especially for sports. Here’s the perfect example: 2017 began with a football team from Georgia losing in miserable fashion (never forget it was 28-3). Now, 2017 is ending with a different Georgia football team winning the SEC Championship game over Auburn and then the semi-final matchup against OU, and now they are heading to the National Championship to face the University of Alabama.

As you can imagine, Georgia fans are going nuts and enjoying the ride. First was the story of the Georgia fan who drove through traffic playing the SEC Championship on a flat screen on his Hummer. Unfortunately for one Georgia lawyer, and University of Georgia alumnus, he almost missed on it all.

From Tuscaloosa News:

A Georgia attorney was allowed to postpone a court hearing in a civil case to attend the Rose Bowl after sending the judge a pleading motion about his hopes to see the University of Georgia prevail in the game.

The Savannah Morning News reports that attorney John Patrick Connell asked for the delay, explaining that his older brother had tickets and travel accommodations for the game pitting the Bulldogs against the University of Oklahoma Sooners in a college playoff semi-final in Pasadena. The Bulldogs did defeat the Sooners, 54-48, in overtime.

My heart goes out to the guy. Imagine your team about to make history and the scales of lady justice tip out of your favor? What was he gonna do, DVR the game and watch it later while he knew his brother was gallivanting around Pasadena celebrating an overtime victory for the ages? Yeah, fuck that. Luckily for him, this small little scheduling conflict worked itself out.

Chatham County Chief Superior Court Judge Michael Karpf, a University of Georgia graduate, responded with his own tongue in cheek writing saying he “reluctantly” granted the lawyer’s request.

The judge was probably all about this. Instead of schlepping his way to court to wear an over glorified black dress and do “law things” like a Judge Judy wannabe, he can wear a Bulldogs jersey while sitting on his couch and cracking open a cold beer instead. Even the guy he was suing was probably happy to spend the day watching college football instead of going to court.

Connell is obviously Georgia’s good luck charm. Plus, being known as the lawyer who convinced a judge that college football is a priority is a pretty great addition to your résumé. If he’s not at the championship game and they lose, you know who to blame.

Previously known for being the 4th best improv comedian in the state of New Jersey, he enjoyed a brief career in politics by serving on his fraternity's eboard until a scandal not as bad as the Lewinsky scandal, but more memorable than Whitewater lead to his resignation. Now, he spends his time making God awful jokes in chapter meetings, rooting for a shitty New Jersey hockey team, and serving on the congressional committee set to determine whether Oprah Winfrey should be classified as a cult or a religion.
