After a storybook 0-12 ending to an illustrious half-century career of building programs like Georgia Tech, Notre Dame (for five days), and my beloved alma mater UCF into three of the biggest powerhouses in college football, 70-year-old George O’Leary is finally riding off into the sunset of retirement in fashion.
From The Orlando Sentinel:
These days, though, O’Leary is doing all of those fun and relaxing things he never really had time to do before. He’s splitting time between his beach house in Palm Coast and his lake house in Georgia. And you’re not going believe it, but the old coach actually just bought some new jet skis.
“I’m really enjoying retirement,” O’Leary said during a phone interview earlier this week. “It’s nice getting up in the morning and not having to worry about 200 other people. I enjoy bouncing around on the jet skis and I really like taking the dogs out in the boat. Nobody bothers me or gets near me because the dogs start barking like crazy!”
What a majestic, breathtaking sight Big ol’ Georgey riding down the Atlantic Coast on a wave runner at a conservative but steady half-throttle pace would be. Trading in his headset and polo for a salt water stained bandana, pair of shades, and puka shell necklace. No doubt in my mind, O’Leary is a big puka shell guy. It’ll fit more like a choker on his turkey neck though and I have to believe his sunburnt skin will be more cartoonishly red than any time he’d blow a gasket on the sidelines when Justin Holman would throw a five yard slant pattern into the dirt.
Man, I’m really going to miss the guy and his run, run, pass, punt philosophy this season. But at least I can find solace knowing he’s finally letting loose and living the life I’ve always dreamed of. Someone’s got to do it.
And if you want to get into the Jet Ski business together, Georgey, I’m always a phone call away..
