Exclusive Interview With Frankie Shaw, Mary Jo From “Blue Mountain State”

======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ==== ======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ====

Next up for “Blue Mountain State” week, we have the lovely Frankie Shaw, but you might know her better as the undeniably attractive Mary Jo from the TV show. These might serve as a good reminder:

That helped, didn’t it? Just for good measure, check out this video released earlier today, where Frankie asks BMS fans to help “tap her keg” and get the “Blue Mountain State” Kickstarter over the million dollar mark:

If that video didn’t have you scrambling for your parents’ credit card by the end, then I don’t think I can help you. Now that the memory of Frankie is fresh in all of your minds, let’s get to the Q&A.

I’m asking everyone this, so don’t get weirded out. Have you seen Romanski’s genitalia in any unexpected fashion?

I’ve blacked this out of my memory. But the answer is probably yes and it was small and gross.

Were you ever a cheerleader? If so, is the culture just like the show? I’ve always imagined it was, so don’t ruin my goddamn dreams here. Mandatory lingerie pillow fights are a thing, right?

I was never a cheerleader. And I don’t think cheerleading culture is anything like how it’s portrayed on the show. I don’t think real life is like the show in any capacity. Real cheerleaders probably work really hard to achieve such physical prowess. I bet they take their sport really seriously. As for me, I was a basketball player. Shooting guard. We did have male cheerleaders though, and they definitely played with pillows.

When you were first casted for “Blue Mountain State,” how did you react? I imagine it would have been an interesting feeling knowing that you’d be a part of one of the raunchiest shows on cable television.

Oh, I was psyched when I was first cast in Blue Mountain State. I was an SAT tutor in Koreatown. I was driving home after the screen test and another tutor called to tell me that the tutoring center was closing down due to lack of funds. I was out of a job! And then an hour later casting called and asked if I had a passport, I was going to Montreal! It was that totally insane surreal magical timing sort of things.

In terms of the humor, oh no, it was right up my alley. My mother showed Animal House at my fifth grade birthday party. None of the girls were allowed over after that. But that’s where I come from. Those guys, Eric Falconer and Romanski are from Boston too – I think it’s a masshole thing. We understand each other.

What do you feel you have in common with Mary Jo, your character on the show?

I always thought of Mary Jo was very similar to Abed on Community but instead of being a super dork, she got all of her information on life from late night Cinemax. She really has no idea, but she thinks she does. Does that make sense? I mean she has to be pretty coocoo, look who her brother is.

After some light IMDb stalking, I noticed we both have English degrees. On a scale of 1 to 1,000, how much more likely does this make it for me to take you out to a nice seafood dinner?

Are you really asking me out on a date in this interview? Only if your thesis was a feminist psychoanalytical interpretation of The Bell Jar….

It seems like there’s a major “bro culture” throughout the set. Being the main female character during the show’s three seasons, does it ever feel annoying to be surrounded by the frat bro-esque atmosphere?

The guys are all giant pussies. They all came to me crying with their dumb emotional problems. What do I look like? A shrink? Also, they made me wear a synthetic penis under my skirt, and even when we went out at night. It made them feel more at ease. I was happy to do it.

I don’t want to make you play favorites, but who on set did you have the most fun working with during the show?

The goat was pretty cool. The badger was edgy, kept me on my toes. I’d say that cast member who got thrown in jail, but that was before I got there. Um…oh Sharla Sumpter our producer. Other than that…

One of the main plots through the series is Mary Jo’s longtime crush on Alex Moran. While I’m sure you can’t give out any exact details, should we plan on seeing this relationship fleshed out more in the finished project?

No and yes.

Your character went on a little lesbian stint during the show’s third season. I know I speak for all of our testosterone laden 18-year-old fans when I ask if this trend continue for the movie?

Yes and no.

We’ve gotten a lot of great reasons from the cast this week on why people should donate to the BMS Kickstarter. While everyone loves Alan’s character, I think the TFM audience would appreciate motivation from somebody a little more attractive than Thad Castle. In your words, why should the TFM faithful help make this movie happen?

We can only make the movie if YOU pledge. That’s right YOU. And then YOU will get to watch it over and over and laugh a lot. It’s for a good cause. You know, the uppers in Hollywood can eat a dick. We want to make a movie, and we are doing it our way. So you can get a movie that YOU will love. So help a brotha out. If everyone donates just a little….we can get there.

Thanks so much for your time, Frankie. We were so glad to have you answer a few questions for TFM today. Any final words for the fans?

Really, I love you all forever.
