Cincinnati Zoo Reportedly Angry About Harambe Memes, Should Try Getting The Fuck Over It

======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ==== ======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ====

You’ve all seen the exploding cultural phenomenon that is Harambe, including plenty of coverage on our site. Whatever your opinion of the world’s favorite gorilla may be, your view of the whole situation probably isn’t as dim as that of the Cincinnati Zoo. The zoo has taken to the internet to denounce the recent rash of memes and other coverage.

From NewsNet5:

“We are not amused by the memes, petitions and signs about Harambe,” Thane Maynard, Cincinnati Zoo director, said by email. “Our zoo family is still healing, and the constant mention of Harambe makes moving forward more difficult for us. We are honoring Harambe by redoubling our gorilla conservation efforts and encouraging others to join us.”

I feel your pain, Cincinnati Zoo. I really do. With that said, fuck your feelings and fuck your “zoo family.” Also, get a real name, Thane Maynard. You’re not fooling anyone. Now, why am I being so insensitive about the whole Harambe situation? To answer that question, we need to look at the evolution of the meme as a whole. Harambe has permeated every aspect of our culture to a much greater extent than any dead animal before him. Standing on the shoulders of Cecil the Lion, Harambe went from a gorilla to America’s sweetheart in a matter of weeks. All of the press coverage and internet memes have created a legacy that has already surpassed all other zoo animals from the dawn of time.

The Cincinnati Zoo wasn’t exactly struggling before all this, but it has received unprecedented media attention from around the world, and it has a single gorilla to thank. By crying about this “disrespect,” the staff of the zoo are trying to make this whole thing about themselves. I know that Harambe wouldn’t tolerate this garbage, and am severely disappointed in the “zoo family.” They, more than anyone else, should know that the Haram-bus is going to keep rolling no matter what you say.

The message to take away from this is that if you’re going to use the legacy of a fallen icon for your own purposes, do it the American way, and make some fuckin’ cash.
