The 2013 Iron Bowl was the best college football game I’ve seen since Vince Young trotted in on fourth and five in 2005. If you need a reminder as to what happened, Auburn’s Chris Davis took a 57-yard field goal attempt that fell just short and returned it 109 yards for the game-winning touchdown after time expired. Auburn fans rejoiced; Alabama fans cried. It was great, and will never be forgotten.

One Auburn alumnus will never forget it for a different reason, because he just shelled out enough money to cover your tuition to purchase the helmet that Davis wore in the game. How much did it set him back? A cool $47,190.

From ESPN:

The helmet used by Auburn kick returner Chris Davis in last year’s Iron Bowl sold for $47,190 early Sunday morning. “We knew when we received this item on consignment it was something special and would be treasured by Auburn fans, alumni and college football collectors,” said Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin, who confirmed that an Auburn alum was the winner.

How crazy are college football fans?

Here are four things you could buy for the same amount that would be a better investment than a used helmet:

1. Sixty-seven bottles of Highland Park 30-year-old scotch (priced at approximately $700 a bottle).
2. Four of the most expensive tickets to this year’s college football playoff championship game (priced at approximately $11,000).
3. Three 1979 Pontiac Trans Ams that you can give to the top three recruits your team wants (priced at $15,000).
4. The intern. He’s free minus the $15 delivery charge, but you can use the cash you save for the bars.

Reportedly, the helmet became the most expensive college football helmet ever sold at an auction. The previous high came earlier this year when a game-worn Archie Griffin helmet sold for $28,680.
