Welles Crowther is a true American hero. The former Boston College 1999 graduate played lacrosse at the school before becoming an equities trader and a volunteer fireman in New York City. On Sept. 11, 2001, Crowther turned in his equities trader hat for a red bandanna to help his fellow Americans in the World Trade Center’s South Tower.

From the Boston Globe:

He ran downstairs and began helping people on the floors below. He covered his mouth and nose with the red bandanna and led people to safety. He carried a woman on his back, down 17 floors. Then he ran back up and talked the way he talked on the ice, on the lacrosse field, willing people to get up and help others if they could. They did what he said, and they made it out.

He saved more than a dozen people that day, but heartbreakingly, Welles did not make it out. His body was found in the rubble months after the tragedy. This Saturday, when the Eagles take on the Trojans of USC, the team will wear uniforms and helmets that don Crowther’s famous red bandanna.

But every BC player will be wearing helmets and uniforms emblazoned with a red bandanna when they play USC.

God bless you, Welles.
