An Interview With Those Guys Who Dropped Out To Start A T-Shirt Company

When I was drinking at a bar in my hometown last week, I had this idea to do a series on fraternity and sorority members who started businesses. Like a “Frat-repreneurship” kind of a thing. I was looking for some of the best and brightest.

Instead, I got these guys:

So what is it that you do?

Oh man, what don’t we do? At SOOper Galaxy 3ntertainment Holdings LLC., we’ve got our hands in media, film production, event management, product development, and social media brand synergy. But mostly, we’re on the cutting edge of fashion expression. We like to think of ourselves as apparel visionaries.

You guys sell T-shirts.

Nah man, we do hats too. Plus Dobie’s got a sick Illustrator file for the sneaker line we’re rolling out as soon as the ‘Starter gets funded. Irons in the fire, bro.

What inspired you to start this business?

I don’t know, man. I was just, like, sitting in the back row of Digital Marketing one day waiting for Ice Age 3 to buffer on my iPad. The prof was talking about client optimization or some shit and I was like, dude. This shit’s dumb. Fucking sucks.

So I thought, yeah, I should drop out.

Did you know what you were going to do?

Not right away. But then I thought, “I longboard a lot.” I should make shirts for people who longboard. My partner Dobie already failed out of his New Media degree at that point. He was just chilling at home getting baked every day and shit, so I was like, you be the creative guy, Dobes, and I’ll take care of the business.

Was there seed money? Did you have investors?

No man! We started this company on the ground floor, and no one owns SOOper Galaxy. We’re independent. It’s part of the philosophy. We never took nothing from nobody.

Except Dobie’s dad. He owns a chain of dental clinics.

This is starting to make more sense now. So what plans do you guys have for the future?

Well, I’m not going to say we’re going to be the next Nike or anything, man, because that’s a cliché. But we’re looking really hard at the business model, you know, trying to develop a competitive advantage.

We’ve already gotten space at some big name festivals. We parked over at CULORR4VE last weekend and moved like 500 shirts!

Wow, that’s actually pretty good.

Yeah. To get one, all you had to do was hashtag our brand in a ‘Gram, but people weren’t really chill with that, so we just ended up handing them out.

How many of those 500 shirts did you actually sell?

I don’t remember. I guess Dobie put $40 into our Square at one point so…one? Oh wait, they were two-for-one. So two.

It’s cool, man. It’s a tough market to break into. You got to get your name out there somehow, you know. We got 15 new followers from the festival, so, basically a huge step forward for our company. We’re gonna be busting profits soon, dude. We’re right around the corner.

How long have you guys been doing this?

Two years.

Okay. Well best of luck. I’m sure SOOper Galaxy is going to be a huge success.

Fuck yeah, man.
